During the Closing Ceremonies for the Transplant Games of America, Kevin Myer, president and CEO of LifeGift, accepted the T.J. Maciak Award. 

Kevin received the honor for his part in bringing the three organ procurement organizations together in support of the Games and keeping the spirit of the Games alive.

The 2013 annual report/2014 calendar, “Hope Has A Voice” received accolades from the Fort Worth chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The piece, which captures the essence of hope through stories of transplant recipients and donor families, received an “Award of Achievement” in the Publications category.

On Saturday, May 31, the family of 17-year-old Joshua Castro came face-to-face with the lives their young son saved through organ and tissue donation. 

Joshua, who passed away after a tragic ATV accident on April 20, 2012, became a hero when he donated his liver, heart, kidneys/pancreas, small intestine and bone.

LifeGift provides a unique program called the Threads of Hope Remembrance Quilt that gives families of donors the opportunity to honor and remember their loved one who gave the gift of life. Families are able to create a wonderful piece of art by incorporating special sentiments that reflect the uniqueness of their loved one.

A multifaceted celebration was held at Blue Mesa in Fort Worth for volunteers on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. The event was to meet new volunteers, re-engage with those we hadn’t seen in a while and to give a Texas-sized send-off to those who would be attending the Transplant Games of America in Houston July 11-15. A great time was had by all.

A screening of “Perfect Strangers,” a movie about living donation, was part of the Donate Life Transplant Games of America festivities back in July. The movie is a beautiful story about Eldonna, “Ellie,” a massage therapist from California, who decided to donate her “spare” kidney to a perfect stranger.

In the first major overhaul of the kidney allocation system, the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) has devised a new system for allocating kidneys to patients. The system is expected to increase patients’ donor base and reduce the number of kidneys that never get transplanted – possibly adding 8,000 life years for future transplant recipients.
