Celebrating Black History Month – A Conversation with Kandi Smith, LSW, LifeGift Family Support Coordinator
What does Black History Month mean to you personally?
Black History Month is a time of reflection, pride, and responsibility for me. It honors the resilience, brilliance, and sacrifices of those who came before me—many of whom created opportunities they never personally got to benefit from. As a Black woman working in health care, I see Black History Month as both a celebration and a reminder: I am standing on the shoulders of trailblazers, and it’s my duty to continue pushing forward with purpose, integrity, and compassion.
What message would you share with the next generation about making a difference?
You don’t have to be loud to be powerful—but you do have to be intentional. Whatever space you enter, know that your presence matters. Lead with compassion, stay curious, and don’t underestimate the impact of showing up consistently and authentically. Making an impact isn’t always about titles; sometimes it’s about the lives you touch, the doors you hold open, and the example you set for someone who’s watching you quietly.
What is a challenge you’ve overcome or experienced that has shaped who you are today?
Working in organ donation has taught me how to sit with grief, navigate difficult conversations, and still show up with empathy every day. Balancing professionalism with emotional resilience hasn’t always been easy, but it has shaped me into someone who understands the power of compassion in moments that matter most. This work has strengthened my voice, deepened my purpose, and reaffirmed why representation in this field is so important.
