Brijesh Vyas’ Second Chance at Life: A Journey of Strength and Gratitude

Brijesh Vyas’ journey began in 2004 when, at just 26 years old, he was diagnosed with both kidney disease and insulin-dependent diabetes while still pursuing his master’s degree.” Despite adhering to a strict diet and exercise, by 2019 it was clear that I would need a transplant sooner rather than later,” Vyas recalls. “My blood reports were troubling, and my kidney function was rapidly declining. I became extremely weak, lost a significant amount of weight, and couldn’t participate in my children’s activities—they were just seven and ten at the time.”

In December 2022, Vyas received life-saving transplants at Houston Methodist. “I’ve never been more aware of the incredible people who supported me throughout this journey,” he emphasizes. “I’m eternally grateful to my transplant team—Dr. Ashish Saharia, Dr. Richard Knight, Dr. A. Osama Gaber, Dr. Hemangshu Podder—and the entire Houston Methodist care team. The nurses were remarkable, attending to my every need as I underwent this life-saving double organ transplant and recovery.”

Vyas acknowledges the immense toll the experience has taken on his wife, Anjali. “She has endured so much—sometimes I think it’s been tougher on her than on me. Our children, Krishiv and Rishabh, have made us proud by staying cheerful and supportive, despite their own emotional struggles,” he shares. “To my friends and colleagues: thank you for your wishes, blessings, and prayers. They’ve been with me every moment. It’s been a long journey from 2019 to now, but it’s not over yet. The reports are encouraging, and I’m uplifted by everyone who has offered help to my family and me.”

“Organ donation is truly life-changing,” Vyas adds. “I can’t thank my donor’s family enough. Their sacrifice gave me a second beautiful life to enjoy with my loved ones. This gift is so valuable—I’m now able to see my kids graduate and participate in their daily activities.”

“I was very blessed to receive my transplants at Houston Methodist Hospital in December of 2022!”
