Saving Lives of All Kinds
Survival and rescue stories continue to emerge after Hurricane Harvey. One in particular hit close to home for LifeGift.
Veronika Tovar, scrub tech at LifeGift, contacted the Communications Department because she wanted to share her story. She shared that her brother-in-law, Jorge Tamez, had passed away in his attempt to save a horse from rising flood waters. Jorge not only saved the horse in his last moments, but several others after his passing. A registered donor, he donated his heart, both kidneys, liver, bone, saphenous vein and corneas – saving the lives of 50 people. Despite their terrible loss, Veronika and her family wanted nothing more than to share his story with others.
Jorge’s story was featured on Univision and Telemundo. He was also an honoree for the 2017 Lone Star Circle of Life. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, his family honored his memory at the Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy game at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Jorge was a happily married 28-year-old man who loved soccer and horses. His lifesaving legacy will continue for years to come, and he will always be remembered as a Harvey Hero.
