Houston, Texas (Feb. 24, 2015) – On Saturday, April 25, hundreds of transplant recipients, donor family members, health care professionals and donation advocates will gather at NRG Park to run for the 13,600 Texans waiting for a second chance during the Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run.

LifeGift, the local organ and tissue donation agency based in Houston and a Donate Life Texas organization, is hosting the event, which is new on the Houston running circuit.

Participants will run in memory of an organ/tissue donor, to honor a transplant recipient or as a sign of support for an individual waiting for a second chance. Transplant recipients and living donors also will participate.

Clutch, the official mascot of the Houston Rockets and donation advocate, will be one of those participants. He will run in honor of his father Paul, who received a double-lung transplant in 2012 and his father’s donor, Ian Heidemann.

The race, which began 12 years ago, has its roots in Fort Worth. LifeGift will continue the tradition with a race scheduled for May 16 in the historical Fort Worth Stockyards, in addition to the inaugural Houston race.

“Since 2003, this fun run has symbolized hope for thousands of men, women and children who wait for lifesaving organ and tissue transplants in the Fort Worth area,” said Kevin Myer, president and CEO of LifeGift. “We are looking forward to expanding our reach, bringing this fun and meaningful event to transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, volunteers, staff and supporters in the greater Houston community.”

The race will begin in the parking lot of LifeGift, 2510 Westridge Street and take participants through parts of NRG Park. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. followed by the 1-mile fun run, which begins at 8:15 a.m.
