Rain Washed Away Race in Houston, but Did Not Dampen Spirits
At the end of the day on Friday, April 24, there were 450 runners and walkers signed up for the first-ever Houston 2nd Chance Run at NRG Park. The stage was set for the inaugural fun run in Houston. Around 6:30 a.m., volunteers arrived ready to work in whatever capacity needed and runners/walkers began trickling in around 7:15 a.m.
Around 7:30 a.m., the skies opened up with a massive thunderstorm. Soaked volunteers, staff and supporters stuck it out – waiting to see what would happen and if the race would continue as planned. At 7:50 a.m., the race was officially canceled for the safety of all those involved.
The nasty weather may have dampened the course, but it did not dampen spirits. Many race participants sought shelter at LifeGift and participated in our Donate Life Month photo booth. Others did whatever they could to help clean up.
While the runners did not get to run and the walkers did not get to walk, volunteers, staff and sponsors managed to have some fun and create lasting memories.
We are already looking forward to next year’s event and are hoping for much better weather conditions. Thanks again to all of our sponsors, volunteers and supporters. Until next year!
