NBA Mascots Run 5K for Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation -- Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run Offers Hope to Fort Worth Community and Beyond
WHAT: Two NBA mascots will join Texans in the Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run to raise awareness of organ, eye and tissue donation. Now in its 12th year, the run honors organ, eye and tissue donors in more than 109 Texas counties in North, Southeast and West Texas. This year’s race is expected to be the largest in its history.
WHO: Clutch, the NBA mascot for the Houston Rockets: Robert Boudwin, the man behind the costume, has a close connection to the cause in that his father received a lifesaving lung transplant in 2012 from a Fort Worth-area donor. His fellow NBA mascot companion, Champ of the Dallas Mavericks, will also participate in the race as a gesture of support.
Transplant recipients and donor families from across Texas and other states: Individuals from as far as Utah, Tennessee, Louisiana Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Florida will travel to participate in this inspirational 1-mile fun run and 5K.
WHEN: Saturday, May 17, 2014
WHERE: Stockyard Station, 130 East Exchange Ave., Packers Ave. and 23rd Street – Lot 914, Fort Worth, Texas 76164. The 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:15 a.m.
WHY: Every day across the country, more than 75 people receive organ transplants. Countless others receive lifesaving tissue transplants and life-restoring corneal transplants. Even so, hundreds of thousands wait for lifesaving organs across the country and 18 people die every day waiting.
The Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run drives awareness to this critical health issue and offers hope to donor families, transplant recipients and those on the waiting list.
Texans can offer hope to each other by registering as an organ, eye and tissue donors on the Donate Life Texas Registry in one of three ways:
