LifeGift Celebrates the Ripple Effect of Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation During National Donate Life Month

Houston, Texas, April 3, 2017 – LifeGift, the federally-designated organ and tissue recovery agency, which offers hope to individuals needing transplants in 109 Texas counties in Southeast, North and West Texas, will celebrate lives saved and legacies of those who gave during National Donate Life Month this April.

Danny Medrano of Houston, Texas is one of the lives that will be celebrated during the month of April. Danny suffers from kidney failure, and as a result,  lost the vision in his right eye.  Additionally, he nearly lost a foot to an infection  and is currently on currently undergoing dialysis treatment.

The only cure for Danny is a kidney transplant.

Danny is not alone in this waiting journey. His wife, Suelen Medrano has been by his side “lifting him up”  emotionally and physically through his battle. The Medranos have been waiting for a new kidney – and their chance to have a child – since October 2014.

“We stay positive,” Danny says. “We’ll faith it till we make it!”

The young couple met in high school, married five years after graduating, and look forward to starting a family together.

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was instituted by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003. Celebrated in April each year, NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through donation.

“As we celebrate National Donate Life Month, we reflect upon what a precious gift LIFE is,” says Kevin Myer, president and CEO of LifeGift. “Saying ‘YES’ to donation results in a ripple effect that impacts so many lives in countless and meaningful ways.”

The Donate Life Texas Registry, the official registry of the state of Texas, is a database of all those who authorize themselves to be lifesaving donors upon their deaths. One can register by visiting the website,, or when obtaining/renewing a driver license or ID at any Texas Department of Public Safety office.

Currently, 52 percent of the U.S. adult population is registered as donors, 47 percent from the state of Texas. Every day 81 people across the United States receive the gift of life. Yet the number of people in need of transplants continues to outpace the number of organs donated.  More than 121,000* people are waiting for a transplant and a second chance at life. In Texas, more than 70 percent of the waiting list is from multicultural backgrounds. On average, 22 people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time. *Based on OPTN data as of February 2017
