Fort Worth Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run – Thank You Mother Nature!
As the day approached for the 13th Annual Fort Worth 2nd Chance Run with almost daily rain and storms in the forecast, we all hoped that Mother Nature would be kind and hold off the rain just long enough for us to host the event. Thankfully, we woke up on Saturday, May 16 to a perfect day. The morning couldn’t have been nicer with cool temps, gentle breezes and overcast skies. We sincerely thank you, Mother Nature!
More than 900 walkers and runners, 200 plus volunteers, cheerleaders, sponsors and not to mention mascots from the three NBA teams in Texas, (Clutch, Champ and The Coyote) were all smiles as the shotgun start commenced shortly after 8 a.m. Birthday girl and double-lung recipient, Tina Rueles, had the honor of starting the race and then quickly joined in to walk the 5K herself.
“Being able to participate in this walk is a true miracle for me and if it wasn’t for the kindness and generosity of my donor family, I would not be here today to celebrate my birthday,” said Tina. “I would like to thank all of the donor families who have given recipients like me the most valuable gift of all, the gift of life."
The family-friendly event was held for the second year in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The winner of the largest team was Team Vento, in honor of 4-year-old Xander, an organ and tissue donor. There were several teams who inched very close to the 93-person-strong team, but Team Xander prevailed.
We have already scheduled the 2016 race for May 14, 2016, so put it on your calendar now and watch for further information to come.
Thanks to all who participated, sponsored, volunteered and supported the run. We appreciate you more than you know and could not have pulled it off without you. See you next year!
