Running for Second Chances: Fun Run Offers Hope to Those Waiting on Lifesaving Transplants

The Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Runs are taking shape and are just around the corner. The Houston race will take place on Saturday, April 25, at NRG Park, and the Fort Worth race will take place on May 16, at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Erin Babin, mother to Elise Babin, 3-year-old liver recipient, will do the shotgun start in Houston, and Tina Rueles, double-lung transplant recipient, will kick things off in Fort Worth.

Clutch, the Rockets Bear, will run both races in full costume as a show of support for his father, Paul, a double-lung recipient, and in memory of Ian Heidemann, Paul’s donor. Swatson, the mascot for the Sugar Land Skeeters, the minor league baseball team of Sugar Land, will make an appearance at the Houston race, and Champ, the mascot for the Dallas Mavericks, will run alongside Clutch in the Fort Worth race.

The planning team encourages carpooling for both races, especially for the Houston race. Parking will be available free of charge in the Harris County Annex (next door to LifeGift) and at Fiesta, located at 8130 Kirby Drive. Otherwise, participants will have to pay $15 in the yellow NRG lot. For the Fort Worth race, free parking will be available in the Stockyards, adjacent to the course.

Packet pickup for Houston will take place April 23, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and April 24, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Houston Hilton Post Oak, located at 2001 Post Oak Blvd.

Packet pickup for Fort Worth will take place May 14, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and May 15, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn Medical Center, located at 912 Northton Street.

Limited packet pickup will be available the mornings of both races from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., but pickup at host hotels is strongly encouraged.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and partners (to date) for their generosity and support!
