The Gift of Life Reunion by Elvia Valdez, PR Coordinator

On Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 two families got the chance to meet for the first time. There was something special about this reunion; it was two families that had been touched by the love and carefree spirit of one child. It was the donor family of Ellias Castillo, 16 month old angel, with the family of the child that received his liver, the ultimate gift of life for a child who was battling liver cancer.

Ellias was a beautiful healthy toddler who was so mature for his young age.  He was and continues to be his parent’s motivation for getting through life.  Ellias’ parents knew that by making the courageous and selfless decision to donate their son’s organs, another family would get another day with their child, when they could no longer.

Both families laughed, cried and talked about the miracle of life because of one pint size child. The Castillo’s shared pictures of their son to the recipient family and rejoiced in seeing how well the two year old child was doing as a result of his transplant.  Since the transplant he has been cancer-free and according to mom has not stopped being a toddler.

The recipient’s parents could not stop saying thank you for the gift of life that was given to their son and often would remain speechless.  Sometimes there are no words that come to mind to express such a deep and admirable heartfelt appreciation.

There is a joy that comes from the holidays which stems from spending time with our family, to live, laugh and love.  There are those gifts that cannot be bought and life and family are truly priceless! This holiday season love your family and friends like there is no tomorrow and if you haven’t already considered giving the gift of life, you should!
