Both received heart transplants that saved their lives. Both have helped to save others.
Mary Frugé, a retired nurse, was rushed to the hospital following a heart attack in 1990 and her family was told to prepare for a funeral. Ten years later, she appeared in the 2000 calendar, celebrating the anniversary of her lifesaving heart transplant. Twenty-two years later, Mary is still inspiring donor registration by speaking at her church, businesses, health fairs and more.
Dr. Lawrence Schkade, Regents Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Arlington, originally had reservations about receiving a heart transplant after being told he only had six months to live. His son, Paul, a physician, convinced him to go through with it. Nearly 20 years later, he, too, encourages others to become donors. Dr. Schkade has also served on the board of directors for both LifeGift and the United Network for Organ Sharing, and has collaborated on research projects that have saved the lives of thousands of transplant patients.
