WHO:

LifeGift and Eternal Rest Funeral Home

WHAT:

Hermandad is Spanish for "unity and brotherhood."  In an effort to educate the Hispanic and African American communities on the importance of preparing for the future, Eternal Rest Funeral Home is partnering with LifeGift on an educational seminar to inform local residents on the importance of organ and tissue donation in the pre-planning stage of funeral arrangements.

WHEN:

Sunday, May 30, 2010 @ 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

WHERE:

Eternal Rest Funeral Home, 4610 Wayside Drive in Houston

WHY:

In today's fast-paced world, people do not think about the future -- let alone plan for it. LifeGift and Eternal Rest Funeral Home are joining forces to educate the community on the different aspects of pre-planning, including organ and tissue donation.  In the process, they are debunking some of th most common myths about organ and tissue donation, which include:

When someone is a donor, he/she cannot have an open casket funeral: This is not true. In fact, donated organs and tissues are removed surgically, in a routine operation similar to open-heart surgery. Donation will not prevent one from having a proper service.

The time to make a decision about organ and tissue donation is at the reading of one's will: This is not true. An organ donation must be made immediatiely followinng death. It's important to make this decision ahead of time. It takes less than five minutes to register as an organ and tissue donor via www.donatelifetexas.org.
