Nurses, physicians, administrators and other hospital staff members are all vital to LifeGift’s success in organ and tissue donation and recovery.

We partner with hospitals to continually seek ways to develop effective, government-regulated donation systems to help increase the number of donated organs and tissues available for transplant.

We also help train hospital staff members on all aspects of donation, from the appropriate identification and timing for referrals of potential donors to the medical maintenance of the donor and the recovery operation.

Laramie

Liver recipient – September 1, 1996, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas

Life has ways of pointing us in the right direction. Sometimes it’s a subtle hint. Other times it’s a big event, like the one Laramie Hicks experienced.

Laramie was a college student with an undecided major when he woke one morning to find the lower half of his body so swollen that he couldn’t wear his jeans or boots. After three weeks of tests, doctors determined that Laramie’s liver was shutting down and, without a transplant, he would die.

Thankfully, he received a liver transplant less than 48 hours later. Laramie soon realized he wished to become a registered nurse and work on the transplant team.

He now serves as a transplant nurse coordinator at Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth and works side by side with Marlon Levy, M.D., the physician who performed his transplant more than a decade ago. For Laramie, his transplant has been lifesaving, lifechanging and, ultimately, life affirming.
