Knox County Hospital District Raises Awareness of Organ and Tissue Donation in West Texas

West Texas Community Hospital Demonstrates Commitment to Organ and Tissue Donation

July 28, 2011 -- LifeGift, the nonprofit organ recovery agency with offices in Southeast, North and West Texas, presented Knox County Hospital District with an award for its support in raising awareness of organ and tissue donation.

The hospital participated in LifeGift's first-ever Donate Life - Texas Registry Challenge during the month of April, which is National Donate Life Month. The purpose of the challenge was to raise awareness of donation and encourage more health care professionals to register as official organ, eye and tissue donors.

Approximately 26 percent of the hospital's workforce participated in the challenge, either by registering as donors or providing proof that they already were registered on their driver's license or by printing out a certificate from the Donate Life - Texas Registry web site. Of the community hospitals in West Texas that participated, Knox County Hospital District had the greatest percentage of participation from its staff.

"We'd like to thank all of the hospitals that participated in helping us add more names to the donor registry," said Sam Holtzman, president and CEO of LifeGift. "The hospitals not only generated more registrants; each facility also heightened awareness of donation among their staffs. Health care professionals are by far some of the strongest advocates and we hope that they will take the donation message into their local communities"
