Award honors those who serve, innovate and save lives

HOUSTON (May 24, 2010) -- The president and CEO of LifeGift, a not-for-profit organ and tissue procurement organization, was recently named a "Healthcare Hero" by the Houston Business Journal.

Sam Holtzman of Houston-based LifeGift, won in the category of "Administrator" and was recognized for his role in saving lives through organ recovery and transplantation. The other nominees in this category included Dr. Marc Boom, Executive Vice President at the Methodist Hospital; Stephen Jones, CEO, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center; and Nancy Nikolovski, Administrator, Physicians Endoscopy Center.

This past fiscal year, Holtzman led his staff to giving 870 people a second chance of life through organ transplantation. Additionally, nearly 1,180 people became tissue donors, providing the gifts of skin to burn victims, heart valves to children with congenital heart disease and bone to those facing an amputation.

The Houston Business Journal "Health Care Heroes Award" recognized those who serve, innovate and save lives through the Houston community.  The program was part of the publication's "Celebrate Enterprise," a four-day multi-event celebration designed for C-level executives and business leaders to share ideas and gather insight.

LifeGift, as an organization, also was nominated as a Community Outreach Finalist, along with Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston, Gateway to Care and the Houston Area Parkinson's Society.
