Happy New You!

Elvia Valdez, LifeGift Public Relations Coordinator

Monday, January 10, 2011

A New Year, why not make it a new you, too? The first of the year just seems so fitting; it gives us a clean slate and a brand new start. A new opportunity to do things we’ve never done before and things we’ve only wished of doing.

Case in point: Running (Participating) in the Houston Marathon. A long, long time ago, I used to like to run. These days, you can only find me running after my 15-month-old son.

But, I was inspired to participate after our very own Vital Volunteer and donor wife Julie Krampitz, of the Todd Krampitz Foundation, mentioned they had some extra marathon bibs left. They were anyone’s for the taking. That would be me.

I was asked by my colleague, Lesley Adams, LifeGift Volunteer Outreach Coordinator, who is also doing the marathon, and I kind of said, “Yes,” without even thinking about it.

When I would mention this to my friends and family, including my husband, everyone’s response was pretty much the same, “What?” They are in as much shock as I am that I am even doing this. To be honest, I’m not afraid. I have every reason to run. I say run, only because it makes more sense than to say participate.

The truth is I’m going to do whatever it takes, “even run” to finish the race in the marathon’s four-hour time frame. I have a reason to finish: 110,000+ men, women and children who are waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

I thank Lesley for thinking of me and Julie Krampitz for running after the cause!
