The circumstances involving Kareena Shokar’s transplant, at age 6 months, are incredible and truly miraculous.

An hour after Kareena’s family was told about a possible donor in Tennessee, the horrific news came that two planes had flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City.

With all flights grounded, they all but lost hope that the liver could be transported to Houston. But later that day, an official in Washington, D.C., gave the Tennessee Air National Guard permission to fly the liver to Kareena. Nine guardsmen transported the tiny gift on a giant military plane. Three hours later, Kareena was in surgery.

And while Kareena and her family are keenly aware of the extraordinary measures taken to make the transplant happen, they know that none of it would have been possible if not for the courage of a heartbroken family who had just lost their own child. Kareena and her family will be forever grateful and will always consider her donor another one of the heroes of 9/11.
