After 17 Years, Donor Mother Meets Daughter's Heart Recipient
Tuesday, May 10, 2011
On April 28, in the meditation garden of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Irene Curtis along with her family, had the opportunity of a lifetime. After 17 years, she finally met the recipient of her daughter's heart, Amy Austin-Kinler of Covington, Louisiana.
Irene lost her daughter, Diana to a brain aneurysm and made the selfless decision to donate Diana's organs. Diana was able to save the lives of many, including Amy's. Amy received Diana's heart just in the nick of time. Her congenital heart defect left her short of breath and always sick. She could barely walk across the room. After she received Diana's heart, she was able to go to work and do things she was never able to do, like go to the gym.
The reunion between Mrs. Curtis and Amy was absolutely beautiful and a real gift to all who were there to witness it. After 17 years, it was a blessing to see the two families finally meet.
