Clergy Outreach Program
As more than 29,000 African-Americans across the country wait for an organ transplant, LifeGift is working with clergy and leaders in this community to help make a difference.
Together, our goals within the African-American community are to:
- Acquaint individuals with LifeGift.
- Increase organ and tissue donation awareness.
- Increase donation consent rates.
- Educate individuals about the lifesaving benefits of organ and tissue donation.
- Address religious concerns about donation.
- Acknowledge and honor donor families through special memorial ceremonies for their gift of life.
Studies and anecdotal evidence suggests that clergy members are an effective voice to influence African-Americans to say "yes" to organ donation.
LifeGift developed a resource manual and ongoing training initiative to help clergy champion the cause of saving lives and improving health through organ and tissue donation. We offer insight and strategies to use when discussing the donation process. And we encourage clergy to customize the training to their field of expertise and effectiveness, and to the needs of those they serve.
Download these resources:
- Clergy Resource Manual – Learn more about the success of transplantation, the desperate and increasing need for organs and tissues, and the growing loss of life due to families' refusal to consent to donate.
- Bible Study Packet – Read some of the material on ethics, enlightenment and generosity, and wisdom and health. The full packet includes bulletin inserts, biblical references, sermon ideas and sample sermons.
