LifeGift and Texas Medical Center Present the Inaugural Hispanic Transplant Symposium

The Inaugural Texas Medical Center Hispanic Transplant Symposium began with the vision of UTHealth/Memorial Hermann transplant surgeon, Dr. Mark Hobeika. Recognizing the need to further educate health care professionals, patients and the local community about the challenges faced by Texas’s growing population of Hispanic patients with end-stage organ disease, institutions from throughout the Texas Medical Center have joined together to create this unique and timely event. The symposium will be held during Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 6, at the TMCx (Texas Medical Center Innovation Institute).

The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Juan C. Caicedo, Director of the Hispanic Transplant Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Caicedo’s successful program is the inspiration for the Hispanic Transplant Symposium. Michael Treviño, a liver transplant recipient and local organ donation advocate, will chair the event.

The symposium is a collaboration between the Texas Medical Center, LifeGift, Nora’s Home for Transplant Patients and Their Families, The Living Bank, and the Texas Medical Center transplant programs. Their collective commitment to improve the lives of organ failure patients has motivated them to present a program that will be of interest to transplant center staff, dialysis center staff, organ failure patients, transplant patients and members of the community. All are invited to attend, and continuing education units (CEUs) will be available.
